RESEARCH

Yuri van der Burgt is an associate professor at the department of Clinical Chemistry and the Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics (CPM) at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC).  He received his PhD in bio-organic chemistry at Utrecht University in 1999. As a postdoc he further developed skills in the emerging field of MS-based proteomics and contributed to the establishment of a glycoproteomics facility at the LUMC. He then worked for three years as a scientist at Crucell, where he was responsible for the analysis of recombinant proteins. He moved to the FOM-Institute in Amsterdam to strengthen his expertise in the field of ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (MS) and worked on biomarker discovery within the Netherlands Proteomics Center. To follow his ambitions in clinical research Dr. van der Burgt returned to the LUMC, where in the meantime the biomolecular MS facility had grown into the CPM. He is responsible for multiple MS-platforms that are used both for in-depth analyses and high-throughput clinical (glyco)proteomics studies. He collaborates with the department of Surgery and applies MS-technology for the discovery and development of (glyco)protein biomarkers for various cancers. His function bridges to the department of Clinical Chemistry with the aim to translate biomarker studies and transfer quantitative clinical chemistry proteomics methods into routine laboratory-developed tests.
