Researchers of the Department of Cell and Chemical Biology and the Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics at Leiden University Medical Center discovered how the cytokine TGF-b inhibit ganglioside production and how these type of glycolipids mediate TGF-b receptor degradation in cells undergoing epithelial to mesenchymal transition.
The process of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer cells has been associated with increased ability to metastasize and therapy resistance. How dynamic EMT of cancer cells is controlled upstream is unclear. This study identifies plasma membrane glycosphingolipid (GSL) composition and related biosynthesis enzymes as key suppressors of dynamic EMT and malignant transformation in human epithelia.
